Colin Johnson

CColin Johnson has on numerous occasions been the Chairman and member of the Judging Panel of the nationally prestigious Herald Sun Camberwell Rotary Art Show. For over forty years he has also judged countless Art Shows for Art Societies throughout Australia as well as the Box Hill Rotary Art Show, Mornington Rotary Art Show Sorrento Rotary Show, Victor Harbor Rotary Show and Chroma Acrylics National Art Awards.

  Colin is a former Senior Lecturer in Painting, Drawing and Art Education, Deakin University – Burwood and Toorak. He retired to take up full-time Fine Art Consultancy in 1994. He is acknowledged as one of Australia’s most experienced Art teacher, demonstrator and painter. He is a former Guest Lecturer for the National Gallery Society of Victoria, contributing to the workshop, lecture and study morning programs as well as articles for publications in Regional Art Galleries. Recently he has returned to teach a specialist course at Deakin University.

  Colin studied Painting and Drawing initially at Toorak Teachers’ College, followed by studies at Caulfield Institute of Technology and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He has lectured in Painting, Drawing and Art Education at Melbourne College of Advanced Education, Carlton, Frankston Teachers’ College and Victoria College Burwood – Deakin University. He is a former National Gallery Education Officer and continues to act as guest lecturer in Painting and Drawing for the Adult Education Centres and numerous Art Societies throughout Australia.

  In 1978 Colin was invited to be a Visiting Scholar in the Art Department at London University Institute of Education. In l978 he was awarded the prestigious Art Study prize by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Rome and Italian Cultural Institute. Also in the same year the British Council also awarded him an extensive Art Study program.

Over the past thirty plus years Colin has held numerous solo exhibitions both in Australia and England and has exhibited in many group exhibitions over these years. His work is represented in both private and corporate collections in Australia, USA, England, Germany, Italy, Canada and Asia. A Retrospective Exhibition of his work was held in l989 at Sale Regional Arts Centre. Currently he undertakes selected commissions, the works reflecting his love of Australia and travel. Recent commissions include an anniversary presentation to the World President of Rotary International.

  Colin specialises in painting and drawing subjects of an emotional environmental nature, using traditional and experimental techniques in oil and acrylics. He has a strong love for expressing light in all its various forms. In particular he is fascinated by surfaces, patterns and moods in nature. Painting and drawing are essential part of his life.

  He is an acknowledged expert in technical aspects of the artists’ craft. He is a past Editor (Victoria) of the “Australian Artist”. Colin also has conducted overseas painting and cultural tours for the “Australian Artist” and travel companies.

  Colin has worked at the Tate Gallery, London and in Suffolk. Travels with his family have taken him to Northern Italy, Switzerland and France. Since 1978 Colin regularly taught the Advanced Landscape Painting Courses for the Field Studies Council of Great Britain at Flatford Mill Centre – home of the noted landscape painter John Constable. In 1996 he presented the 50th Anniversary lecture for the Field Studies Council in Suffolk.

  In l993 Colin received an Australia/China Council Award to teach in Anhui Province, China. For his services he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of Fine Arts of the People’s Republic of China. During that year he also visited Bangkok, Thailand where he was Guest Lecturer at Silpakorn University. His work was also included in the 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the University.

  Over twenty years he taught Art and Design for Textile Artists and Embroiderers at Deakin University, Box Hill Institute of Technical and Further Education and the Embroiderers’ Guild of Victoria.

  Colin is currently Past President of the Rotary Club of Box Hill and a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a Past President, Signatory and Life Member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and a former member of the Victorian Artist’s Society. His other former community involvement includes Foundation President of the Friends of Stonnington, Chairman of the Waverley City Gallery Committee of Management, Foundation Member of Arts Waverley, Life Member of the Waverley Art Society and Peninsula Art Society and Foundation President and Life Member of the Caulfield Grammar School Society of the Arts.
